A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BANYO

1925

The story of Banyo Baptist Church (BBC) began in 1925 when Pastor C J Kajeweski, enlisted the help of Mrs Nichols and Mr & Mrs J MacKenzie to help start a Sunday School. They met in the School of Arts building at Banyo (now demolished). On the first Sunday, 19 children attended. Nundah Baptists were asked to "Mother" the fledgling community and accepted the task. Among those were Mr & Mrs Len Westwood, Mr J Pollock, Mr & Mrs Rix, and their daughters Millie, Mavis and Dorothy. After WWII the district grew rapidly and the need for a full time Pastor was evident. John Leitch, a retired missionary was called and with help from the Nundah Church with the stipend, served from 1946-1952. An evening service was added at this time. During Pastor Leitch's term, the church was constituted a member church of the Baptist Union in 1949, with 31 members transferring from Nundah as foundation members.

1967

The church building soon became inadequate and was extended and enclosed beneath. By 1949 the Sunday School attendance reached 100.  In 1953 an old army hut was moved from the Chermside camp to the Church grounds.  This served many years for the Sunday School and Boys' and Girls' Brigade activities. As the old church became inadequate for the congregation a move was made to build a larger one. The Church was opened on Saturday 11 February 1967 by the Vice President of the Baptist Union, Reverend Murray Sinfield. In 1980 a move was made to erect a new church hall with more adequate facilities.

For 100 years it had ministered and served the community of Banyo and Nudgee area. Being a spiritual light for those seeking to know more about Jesus. It had provided for the families and children of that area through years of Sunday School and Boys' and Girls' Brigade activities, and holiday programs.

2025

BBC reached a pivotal moment at the beginning of 2025 where the church had seen the declining and aging of the congregation over a number of years. Realizing the need for help the leadership requested Mark Westhuyzen (Director of Church Health Services, Queensland Baptists) undertake an externally facilitated church review. This review was to focus on potential pathways to see the revitalization to health and fruitfulness for the decades to come. 7 options & pathways forward were bought to BBC. One that was agreed upon was to approach another healthy Baptist church to see how they may help.

Over the course of several meetings between BBC and North East Baptist Church (the old Nundah Baptist), it has become apparent that both churches had a similar heart and passion to reach the Banyo and surrounding suburbs and their community with the life-changing message of Jesus. In an overwhelming majority vote taken of members on Sunday February 1 2025, Banyo Baptist Church decided to join with NEB for the long-term purposes of preaching the gospel, welcoming, evangelising and discipling as a ministry and mission as a Baptist church to the people of Banyo and its surrounding suburbs. So after 100 years the two churches became “One Church – Two Communities” once again.

    Our vision is centred on helping people encounter Jesus, grow in authentic discipleship paths, and becoming a part of a connected genuine community of believers. Our main focus of evangelism will be as encounter givers of Jesus through lifestyle, not just a program, and want to equip people to share Jesus naturally through everyday relationships, prayer, hospitality, and Spirit-led conversations.

    The pathway for "Lost People Saved" begins with intentional connection through our everyday lives, outreach, serving, community engagement, and relational evangelism. From there "Saved People Nurtured", people are invited into community through gatherings, meals, connect groups, Alpha and church life. We want people to belong before they believe. "Nurtured People Equipped" As people begin following Jesus, discipleship happens through biblical teaching, mentoring, prayer, accountability, and activation in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We aim to create a culture where people are growing in spiritual maturity, identity in Christ, and confidence in living on mission. "Equipped people Mobilised" is our desire is to see multiplication in the everyday, disciples making disciples and leaders raising leaders. So that every person is equipped to minister in their everyday world and help others encounter Jesus.
